Top Job Without Top Pay

What your job is called will have an impact on compensation

2010 NonProfit Times Salary & Benefits Survey

The next time salary negotiations come around, those who remember anything from their high school English literature classes might want to invoke a little Shakespeare. As Juliet of Romeo and Juliet fame asked rhetorically,“that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet?”

What’s that got to do with your job or your salary? If recent data is any indication, Juliet knew what she was pining about. The average salary for a president/chief executive officer (CEO) was $154,107 while an executive director, also the top job at some organizations, earned an average $84,361, according to the 2009 Nonprofit Organizations Compensation and Benefits Survey by
The NonProfit Times. That’s a difference of 46 percent...

...It’s not just the top-level position where salaries vary among seemingly similar job titles. A chief financial officer earned an average $112,818 annually
compared to $86,416 for a director of accounting/controller.

Non-executive staff also saw some disparities, where a Web administrator earned an average $54,551 with more than six years experience, but a Webmaster came in at $58,000 with an average four years of experience...

Lots more info and charts in the full report, including salaries by size of budget and by region.
